Albritton Middle School students volunteer at Hampton Primary field day

Students from Albritton Middle School spent a recent school day leading games and supporting activities at Hampton Primary School’s annual field day.

Seventh- and eighth-grade members of the Student Council and National Junior Honor Society walked the short distance between the neighboring campuses to help physical education teacher and event coordinator Piper Cronin-LeMaster. The middle school volunteers managed stations that included a chicken toss, bowling, three-legged races, tricycle races, an obstacle course, arts and crafts, and a game room. They also assisted with setup, equipment, and cleanup.

The request for help originated with Cronin-LeMaster and was passed to NJHS advisor Dena Vassey and Student Council advisor Christine Belzic. Both groups regularly emphasize service. Student Council members organize school events and decorations throughout the year. NJHS members of the Nellie McCoy chapter volunteer at Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation activities on Fort Bragg. Supporting a neighboring DoWEA school fit both organizations’ expectations.

After the morning session, Hampton staff provided lunch for the volunteers. Students then joined a foam station activity before returning for a second shift of stations and final cleanup.

Hampton Primary Principal Mohan Vaswani thanked the group. “I remember some of you from my time at Albritton,” he said. “It is so good to see you again, and I have only heard good things about our middle school volunteers from Hampton teachers today. This field day was such a success thanks in large part to your participation.”

Belzic noted the leadership shown by quieter students who stepped into active roles. Student volunteers Alyssa and Amber described helping the younger children and joining some of the games as highlights of the day.

An informal survey of Student Council members found many ranked the field day among their favorite activities of the school year. Advisors said the collaboration reinforced habits of responsibility and service that strengthen the school community.

The middle school students and advisors said they hope to return next year.
