Flu season is upon us!  According to the CDC, the influenza vaccine is our best defense against seasonal influenza.  Influenza (Flu) | CDC  DoDEA requires the flu shot annually with a deadline of December 1st each year, or the submission of a signed immunization waiver. Immunization waivers must be obtained at the school and must be renewed annually. Flu shots may be obtained at your assigned medical clinic or at a Tricare participating pharmacy such as Walgreens, Wal Mart, CVS, and Publix to name a few.  Please email a copy of your student’s flu shot as soon as possible.

E-scooters and Bikes: we have witnessed an increase in injuries in the health room from students riding e-bikes and e-scooters to school. Thankfully non have been too serious, but the potential is greater due to their weight and speed.  Tufts medicine has the following tips for riding safely: E-Bike and E-Scooter Safety| Tufts Medicine

  1. Always wear a helmet. Helmets can prevent many head injuries.
  2. Obey traffic laws. E-bikes follow the same rules as bicycles. Bikes and scooters must be walked when crossing the pedestrian bridge.
  3. Be visible. Wear bright clothing, use reflectors and lights at night to be seen by traffic.
  4. Ride defensively. Assume cars may not see you or misjudge your speed. Pass pedestrians safely on the left and announce you are passing. Stay alert.
  5. Start slow. If you're new to e-bikes, practice in a safe area before riding on busy streets.
  6. Check your equipment. Ensure brakes work, tires are properly inflated and lights are functioning before each ride.

Be safe Bulldogs!

Yours in good health,

Nurse Lopez
