Sixth Graders Explore the Wonders of Space at Fayetteville State University

A group of 120 enthusiastic sixth-grade students embarked on an exciting study trip to the planetarium at Fayetteville State University on Friday, April 4, 2025. The trip, which was organized by Natalie Luedtke, was designed to ignite the students' curiosity about space and provide a hands-on learning experience outside the classroom.
Upon arrival, the students were greeted by the Mr. Joseph Kabbes, manager of the planetarium, and divided into two large groups. One group would be inside, while the other group was outside, before they swapped places, ensuring that all students were able to experience every activity. The highlight of the visit was a captivating planetarium show, led by Dr. Jonathan Breitzer, where the students marveled at the wonders of the universe. They learned about stars, planets, and galaxies, gaining a deeper understanding of the cosmos.Â
One student said she learned that the constellation Leo isn't visible in August, even though that is the month of its Zodiac sign. Another student said he learned that Pluto was named by an eleven-year-old girl, and that it could be considered a planet because it has a moon.
In addition to the planetarium show, the students participated in a fun and educational activity: making paper air rockets. This hands-on project allowed them to apply principles of aerodynamics and physics in a creative way. The students eagerly crafted their rockets, experimenting with different designs to see which would fly the farthest. They became very competitive and creative with their designs.Â
After a morning filled with learning and exploration, the students enjoyed a picnic lunch on the university grounds. It was a perfect opportunity for them to relax, socialize, and reflect on the exciting experiences of the day. As one student quipped, "The rockets were fun, and it was nice to eat lunch outside!" The students enjoyed turning somersaults and flipping on the grassy knoll at FSU before boarding the buses to return to Fort Bragg.
Overall, the field trip to FSU's planetarium enriched the students' knowledge of space and fostered a sense of community and teamwork, making for a memorable and impactful day for all involved.
